Sixties London Film

An outside shot of a house.  It is quite large but dingy and unkempt.  Children are playing noisily in the street and women are chatting on the corner.  The women’s clothes and the model of the car parken in the street tell us it is the 1960’s.

A tracking shot going upstairs.  Sun is shining in through a window at the top of the stairs.

Cut to a room.  The news is playing on a radio in the background.  A girl is sitting at a table in the room.  She is young and pale with shoulder length dark hair.  She is deep in thought but what she is thinking is not obvious from her facial expression.  The room is rather gloomy with brown floral wallpaper, there is a lot of brown in the room.

Cut to the girl’s hands on the table.

She stands up.  She is wearing a short dark dress which she smoothes down as she stands up.  She call to someone we can’t see.

“I’m going out.”

We see her from behind walking down the stairs we saw earlier.

We see her walking in the street.  It is sunny.  She stands still foe a moment enjoying the sun.

A long garden wall with a purple door.  The girl appears in shot she walks towards the door, pushes it open and walks in.

We look over her shoulder into the garden.  It is sunny and overgrown.

She tentatively calls out “Hello”.

She opens the back door of the house and walks in.  The camera follows her into an old fashioned scullery.  Grey, dark and untidy.

We hear gentle, ethereal music on the soundtrack.  The camera continues to follow her into a back sitting room.  The room is painted in bright colours and there are mobiles hanging from the ceiling.  The comes out into a hallway and then goes upstairs.

In the room at the top of the stairs a young man is sitting cross legged on a bed.  He has long hair and is quite handsome but with bad skin and a straggly beard.

“Hello.”

“Hello’” He seems startled.

“You left the house open.”

“Did I?”

“I could have been a burglar or anything.”  They both laugh; neither of them seems too concerned about burglars.

They sit in silence looking at each other.

“Where are the others?”

“They went to the park.”

“The park?”

“Yes, the park.”

A short sequence showing half a dozen brightly dressed young people blowing bubbles in the sunshine in a park.

The girl makes a face.

“I didn’t come to see them.  I came to see you.”

She leans toward him and they kiss.

Cleaning Inc. Ealing styled

Late evening, blustery in fading summer light, a taxi driver draws up to a circa 1904 decommissioned underground station. Stately and designed to celebrate the new with pride, bedecked in red tiles, it now lies crusted at the edges with Old Kent grime, without an obvious welcome.

Cleaning Inc in neon brightens  an uninviting door.

Gary, a taxi driver, draws up at his accustomed time and unnecessarily bellows into the intercom – he can be seen on the cctv – and sprightly runs down the steps.

Hello ladies as he glances round to check out the scenery; young women in pseudo nurses uniforms, practising their feather duster routine to the sounds of Glen Miller under the watchful eye of Madame Musette. Unbelievably tiny, bold and mischievous in raging colours and vibrant lips she hollerss a welcome over the upbeat, ‘Why ‘ere he is ladies, our own Nijinski, fancy a turn on the floor love, before you get down to the night’s business?’

Gary takes a drag of his fag, grinds it into an ashtray before taking a turn with Lisa, who is nearly ready to leave. She grabs her long faux fur, draping it round her skinny frame, clutching her apron and cap. Musette gives Gary the addresses and they drive into the night of the Old Kent Road.

They reach a large Victorian house, set back with a set of steps, gloomy.

‘You’ll be alright?

‘Course, ‘e’s asthmatic.’

Gary carries a holdall and the pair let themselves into an equally gloomy corridor, leading into a large drawing room.

A middle aged man, hooked up to oxygen, weakly smiles, trying suggestiveness. Lisa props him up and, after theatrically dropping the fur, donning the cap and apron, she stars to clean, dust and scrub.

Lisa likes to do a thorough job and makes sure she is in Wheezer’s sight, making him chortle with limped desire.

‘Right love, same time, same place only next week.’ Everything replaced, she lifts the ton off the table, kisses her fingers and places them on his brow. ‘I’ll let myself out.’

Gary lurks in the shadows, envious of the show she gives her customers. He knows she will never do it for him, but he can hope and care. She smiles carelessly at him and scurries into the back of the taxi. ‘One down, five to go.’

Dawn breaks as they head back to the Old Kent Road and Madame Musette is still smiling as they hand her five tons.

‘We’d arranged six for you tonight.’

‘Oh, number three. Couldn’t get in. Went for a coffee.’

‘Hmm,’

Gary shifts from one leg to the other, pats his back pocket protectively.

Maybe, just maybe, Lisa would clean, just for him.

Scene 1

SCENARIO

Location: Terrace of former Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London

Fortingall is seen crouching,   looking over the parapet at scene below. His breath is visible.

A procession of hooded and gowned individuals  proceeds slowly and in step around the cobbled square, carrying large multi-coloured eggs, each genuflects when passing the larger egg set  on the cube in central position.  (scene length  4 minutes)

The sound of an orchestra tuning up can be heard in the background, also the discordant voices of 100 young children.

Fortingall  stands up,  turns and moves towards a  large window overlooking an atrium  where the one hundred children can be seen, some sitting in groups, others skipping around stretching their arms upwards,  some dancing on their own or in small groups, some crying and being comforted by the uniformed chaperons.  Around 25 wear feathered head-dresses, some seem to enjoy wearing them, others shake their heads to dislodge them.

ORCHESTRAL  MARTIAL MUSIC IN BACKGROUND GROWS LOUDER

Fortingall surveys this scene, frowns, and strides towards a revolving glass door. His grey feathered wings unfurl as he does so, the feathers shake in the wind (closeup here) and he marches through.

Voiceover: “The world is no longer interest in heroes. Ask youself, do you know any heroes?  Let me introduce Fortingall”

INCIDENTAL MUSIC

Foreign tourist no. 1 facing no. 2

“Honey get that little churchy thing into the shot”

No.2 “OK honey, ” looks skywards – “ Look” pointing “you see that?  Oh it’s gone now.”

Tourist no. 1 turns and looks up then looks at tourist no. 2.
